Reports of Performances 2016-2020

This list covers 2016 - 2020. It is intended to include all peals rung in the District and all quarters rung by a local band or with local interest.  Other significant performances are also included.  Please inform the webmaster (wisbechweb@elyda.org.uk) of any omissions or errors.

2020

Monday 9th March.  A quarter peal of Plain Bob Royal was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech in memory of David Gilbert.

Friday 6th, Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th March.  Peals were rung by the Society of Royal Cumberland Youths at St John the Baptist, Terrington St. John, St. Peter and St. Paul, Watlington, St Edmund, Downham Market, Holy Trinity, Stow Bardolph and St Peter and St Paul, Wisbech.  Methods were Surprise Minor, Bristol Surprise Major, Ytterbium Surprise Major and Cambridge Surprise Royal.  The peals were all rung in memory of George W Pipe.

Saturday 15th February.  A peal of Glasgow Surprise Major was rung at St Edmund, Downham Market.  This was rung as a birthday compliment to Erin Marsden.

Friday 14th February.  Called changes were rung at St. Edmund, Downham Market to celebrate West Norfolk Day and the opening of the King's Lynn Mart.

Monday 10th February.  A quarter peal of Plain Bob Royal was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.  This was rung as a wedding compliment from the band to Ben and Jemma Meyer.  It was a first quarter of Royal for Gary Bainbridge, first blows in Royal for Martin Slough and a first quarter of Royal as conductor for Nick Elks.

Monday 13th January.  A quarter peal of Plain Bob Major was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.  This was rung in memory of Gareth Dancer of Aberystwyth, whose funeral was today; Gareth was a friend of Helen Greenleaves who rang the 3 . It was a first quarter of major for Wisbech ringer Janet Curry, who rang the treble

2019

Monday 9th December.  Two quarter peals were rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech, with a total of four firsts.  1296 Grandsire Caters was a first on 10 on a working bell for Ben Keating (treble) and a first in method as conductor for Nick Elks.  1296 Cambridge Surprise Minor was a first of treble bob for Martin Slough (treble) and a first of Surprise Minor for Ben Keating.

Monday 11th November.  A quarter peal of Plain Bob Major was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.  This was rung half-muffled for Armistice Day and was a first of major on an inside bell for Martin Slough.

Monday 23rd September.  A quarter peal of Reverse Canterbury Pleasure Place Doubles was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.  This was a first in method for Heather Dobson and Martin Slough, and was rung as a 90th birthday compliment (for 20th September) to June Boddington, Martin's mother.

Monday 9th September.  A quarter peal of Grandsire Caters was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.  This was a first on 10 for Ben Keating, who rang the tenor, and a first on 10 away from cover for Martin Slough, who rang the treble.  The quarter was dedicated to St. Mary’s, Wimbotsham after the devastating fire.

Monday 12th August.  A quarter peal of Plain Bob Major was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.  This was a first quarter of major for Kirstie Urquhart, who rang the 3rd.

Saturday 6th July.  A quarter peal of Plain Bob Minor, with cover, was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.  This was rung for the Wisbech Rose Fair, and also thinking of Kirstie Urquhart, injured in the cause of campanology, who would otherwise have rung.

Monday 10th June.  A quarter peal of Stedman Caters was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.  This was a first of Stedman at any stage for Gary Bainbridge, a first on ten for Francis Herne (who rang the 8) and a first of Stedman Caters for Nicholas Elks.  It was dedicated to Eileen Searle (nee Slough), aunt of the tenor ringer, born 22nd April 1918, died 9th June 2019 aged 101, and also dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings.  Congratulations to all.

Saturday 1st June.  A peal of Surprise Minor (7 methods) was rung on handbells for the Ely DA in Downham Market.  This was rung with best wishes to Philip and Janet Waterfield, celebrating their 56th Wedding Anniversary on this day.

Also on Saturday 1st June, a quarter peal of Cambridge Surprise Minor was rung at St. Peter, Walpole St Peter. This was rung for the Flower Festival and was a first of treble bob for Jeanette Cox on the treble, and a first of Surprise Minor for Kirstie Urquhart on the 5.

Sunday 21st April.  Rounds and Call Changes were rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech before the Easter Sunday service.  This was the first Sunday service ringing for Tina and Malcolm Thorpe, and dedicated to Ann Slough, aunt of the Conductor, 24th Oct 1935 - 21st April 2019.

Thursday 18th April.  Bells were tolled at 7 pm to show support for Notre Dame, as requested by the Archbishops, at Clenchwarton, Fincham, March, Walsoken and Wisbech.  Also, Rounds and Call Changes were rung at Methwold and Terrington St. Clement.

Monday 8th April.  A quarter peal of Plain Bob Minor was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.  This was a first quarter inside for Kirstie Urquhart and for Martin Slough.  The quarter was rung in memoriam Anthony G. Parry. 

Sunday 24th March.  A quarter peal of 1260 Doubles (4m) was rung at March for the baptism of Olive June Goakes, granddaughter of Michael Goakes and niece of Andrew Goakes. 

Monday 11th March.  A quarter peal of Grandsire Triples was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.  This was a first quarter on 8 for Kirstie Urquhart on the treble.  The quarter was rung as "Get well soon" to Martin's foot and as birthday compliments to Sarah Bradbury; to Sue Haines and Jeremy Pratt (70 during the previous week); to the treble ringer (50 today); to Sue Marsden for the next day.

Monday 11th February.  A quarter peal of Plain Bob Major was rung at St. Peter and St. Paul, Wisbech.  This was a first quarter of Major for Martin Slough on the treble. (First touch!) (First blows!).  The quarter was rung in memoriam Marjorie Gagen of Magdalen and also in memoriam William James Waller (great-grandfather of Sue Marsden who rang the 4) who died on 12th February 1919 as a result of WW1.

Saturday 9th February.  A peal of Tornado Delight Minor was rung for the Ely DA at Downham Market.  This was rung to mark 40 years service of the Panavia Tornado at nearby RAF Marham.  The Tornado will shortly be withdrawn from service, being replaced with the F35 Lightning 2.

Also on Saturday 9th February, a quarter peal of Plain Bob Minor was rung at Walsoken.  This was a first quarter peal inside for Jeanette Cox, who rang the 2.

Sunday 27th January.  A quarter peal of Plain Bob Doubles was rung at March, in celebration of Trevor Bevis being a member of the Ely Association for 70 years and for Holocaust Memorial Day.

2018

27th November.  210 changes Grandsire Triples, and call changes on 10, were rung  at St. Peter & St. Paul, Wisbech, to celebrate the visit today by HRH Prince of Wales and HRH Duchess of Cornwall.

Sunday 11th November:  Ringing for the 100th anniversary of the Armistice on 11/11/1918:  Plain Hunt Triples at Downham Market; rounds and call changes at Wiggenhall St. Mary Magdalen, Fincham, Wisbech, Upwell, March, Denver, Tydd St. Giles, Walsoken and Watlington; Grandsire and Plain Bob Doubles at Shouldham.

Thursday 25th October.  A quarter peal of Grandsire Triples was rung at St. Peter & St. Paul Wisbech.  This was a first quarter peal on 8 away from cover for Martin Slough, who rang the treble.

Saturday 29th September.  A quarter peal of Yorkshire Surprise Royal was rung at St. Peter & St. Paul Wisbech.  This was rung remembering the three Wisbech ringers killed during World War I: Private Ernest Frederick, Sergeant George Edward Piggins, and Private Thomas Haines, Cambridgeshire Regiment.

Wednesday 26th September.  A quarter peal of Plain Bob Doubles was rung at St. Peter & St. Paul Wisbech.  This was rung n commemoration of Private Thomas Haines, formerly a ringer at this tower, who died of wounds whilst fighting for his country in WW1 on 26th September 1918.  It was the first quarter away from cover for Martin Slough, who rang the treble.


Sunday 8th July.  A peal of Zonzamas Surprise Royal was rung for the Yorkshire Association at St. Peter & St. Paul Wisbech

Thursday 5th July.  A quarter peal of Grandsire Caters was rung at St. Peter & St. Paul Wisbech.  This was rung for the Patronal Festival, Ss Peter & Paul, after Evensong for the Wisbech Rose Fair and for the 70th anniversary of the National Health Service.

Monday 25th June.  A quarter peal of Grandsire Caters was rung at St Peter & St Paul Wisbech.  This was a first quarter on ten for Steve Millington, Gary Banbridge and Martin Slough. 

Monday 28th May.  A quarter peal of Grandsire Triples was rung at St. Peter & St. Paul Wisbech.  This was a first quarter for Martin Slough on the tenor.

Saturday 19th May.  A peal of Doubles (11 methods) was rung for the Lincoln DG at St. Margaret, Clenchwarton.  This was rung to celebrate the Royal Wedding this day of HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Saturday 19th May. A peal of Yorkshire Surprise Royal was rung for the Ely DA at St Peter & St Paul, Wisbech.

The peal was rung after the wedding of Cpl. Andrew Reeve and Rosemary Wells and in celebration of the marriage of HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Tuesday 15th May. A quarter peal of Plain Bob Doubles was ring at St Martin of Tours, Fincham. This was a first quarter peal for Wendy Masters on the treble and Rob Thompson on the tenor.

Monday 23rd April. A quarter peal of Grandsire Triples was rung at St Peter & St Paul, Wisbech. The quarter peal was rung as a belated but heartfelt welcome to Revd Canon Matthew Bradbury, also as a welcome to our new prince, born this day, and to mark St George's Day. It was a first on eight for Jeanette Cox, on the treble, and Robert Cox, on the tenor.

Wednesday 7th February. A quarter peal of Mixed Doubles (5 methods) was rung at All Saints, Shouldham. This was to celebrate the conductor's 75th birthday.

2017

Thursday 14th December. A peal of Surprise Minor (7 methods) was rung for the St Blaise Society at All Saints, Tilney All Saints.

Friday 24th November. A peal of Doubles (12 methods) was rung for the Lincoln DG at St Margaret, Clenchwarton. This was rung in thanksgiving for the birth of Jasmine Joyce Davey on yesterday 23rd November, Granddaughter of the ringer of the 4th and the first girl to be born into the Davey family descent since 1756

Tuesday 1st August. A peal of London No.3 Surprise Royal was rung for the Around Ringers at St Peter & St Paul, Wisbech.

Sunday 8th January. A quarter peal of Plain Bob Doubles was rung at St Wendreda, March. This was rung before Rev Clifford Stocking's final service at St.Wendreda's Church to wish him all the best on his new post in Margate. It was a first quarter peal for James Eyers.

2016

Saturday 17th December. A peal of Julie McDonnell Doubles was ring for the Ely DA at St Margaret, Clenchwarton. This was rung for Bellringers Strike Back Against Blood Cancer.

Saturday 10th December. A peal of Surprise Minor (7 methods( was rung for the Ely DA at St Mary, Denver. This was the first peal to be rung on these bells since rehanging.

Thursday 29th September. A peal of Spliced Surprise Minor (7 methods) was rung for the Society of Royal Cumberland Youths at Ss Peter & Paul, Watlington.

Thursday 29th September. A peal of Spliced Surprise Minor (22 methods) was rung for the Society of Royal Cumberland Youths at St Mary Magdalene, Wiggenhall St Mary Magdalen.

Sunday 17th July. A quarter peal of Plain Bob Doubles was rung at St Wendreda, March. This was rung for Sunday service.

Monday 14th March. A peal of Fenchurch St Paul Alliance Major was rung for the Lincoln DG at St Clement, Terrington St Clement, This was the first peal in the method.

Saturday 5th March. A peal of Surprise Minor (7 methods( was rung for the Norwich DA at St Mary, Denver. This was the last peal to be rung on these bells before rehanging.

Friday 29th January. A quarter peal of Yorkshire Surprise Major was rung at St George, Methwold. This was rung in memory of David Bowie.
